Day 10: Protect your Heart

Wisdom is not an intellectual thing. It is beyond being book-smart. It originates from God; so, it is God-given.

Another point worth noting is that wisdom is a heart thing not necessarily of the mind. The reality of the matter is God looks at the heart (1Sam 16: 7). The state of our hearts matters to God and that is why we must protect them. You must remember that everything you do as people comes from the heart. That means if your heart is not in whatever you are doing, it doesn’t count with God.

Some of us have been working so hard to get things done or to prove something to someone but are not counted because our hearts are not in those things. And because of this, it does not count with God. The height of a man in God’s kingdom is determined by their heart, not their status. Your status is not determined by your bank account, educational achievement, your connections, positions, influence, or socioeconomic. If your heart is not registered or in the right place, it means that you have not even started at all.

So, we are encouraged to “guard our hearts with all diligence because out of it are the issues of life” (Pro 4: 23). I like the way the Passion Translation puts it:

"So above all, guard the affections of your heart, for they affect all that you are. Pay attention to the welfare of your innermost being, for from there flows the wellspring of life" (Pro 4: 23, TPT)

Let’s quickly look at what God’s word says about the heart:

  1. Your heart is the seat of your courage. If you don’t have a heart, you will remain spineless. Without courage, you can’t get anything done in life.
  2. Salvation is obtained because we believe with our hearts:
    • “And what is God’s “living message”? It is the revelation of faith for salvation, which is the message that we preach. For if you publicly declare with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will experience salvation. The heart that believes in him receives the gift of the righteousness of God—and then the mouth confesses, resulting in salvation.” (Rom 10: 9-10, TPT).
    • God gives us a new heart when we accepted Jesus as our Savior and Lord.
  3. Your heart is the storage for your words. Out of the abundance of the heart, a person speaks (Lk 6: 45).
    • Your heart is like a manufacturing plant. You cannot be bigger than the state of your heart. So, if your heart is not right, your life is not going to be right.
    • People are known in this same way. Out of the virtue stored in their hearts, good and upright people will produce good fruit. Likewise, out of the evil hidden in their hearts, evil ones will produce what is evil. For the overflow of what has been stored in your heart will be seen by your fruit and will be heard in your words” (Lk 6: 45, TPT).
  4. The seat of thoughts (Pro 23:7)
    • It is the place where joy, sorrow, love, anger, and bitterness flow from.
  5. Our choices and intentions are rooted in the heart.
    • It is the source of our spiritual life.
  6. Our heart reveals our true self (Jer 17: 9).
  7. Our heart is the source of our desires (Ps 37: 4)
  8. Our love originates from the heart. You don’t really love until your heart. is committed. So, you are to love God, yourself, and others with all your heart (Mt 22: 37-39).
  9. If your heart is not registered with God, you are not registered at all. The state of your heart either causes you to get God’s attention or turns His heart away from you (2Chro 16: 9).

One thing that God is asking from you is your heart (Pro 23: 23). Because where your heart goes toward what you treasure. If you treasure God, your heart will be with Him. On the other hand, if you treasure things, your heart will follow suit.

Prayer: Lord, please cleanse my heart and help me to walk with a perfect heart with you in Jesus’ name. Amen!
