Day 20: Expression of Wisdom (4)

Another way a person expresses their wisdom is by whom they choose to associate with. A wise person chooses their friends carefully. The truth is that you are a reflection of the people you have around you. There was a saying that I grew up with, “show me your friend and I will tell you the type of person you are.”

King Solomon who was believed to have written the majority of the book of Proverbs wrote: “if you want to grow in wisdom, spend time with the wise. Walk with the wicked and you’ll eventually become just like them” (Pro 13: 20, TPT). It is pretty much self-explanatory.

You want to make friends with those who will help you keep your focus on God. You want to associate with those who will sharpen you. You want to relate to those who will challenge and inspire you to do good works. Those who will not support you to do what is wrong. Those who will keep you in the fear of God. You don’t want to “walk and live in the counsel of the ungodly [following their advice, their plans and purposes], or stand [submissive and inactive] in the path where sinners walk, or sit down [to relax and rest] where the scornful [and the mockers] gather” (Ps 1: 1, AMPC).

What this means is that you will not be enticed to succumb to peer pressure. It is easier for some of us to follow the multitude to do what is wrong than to stand for what is right. There is no way you can live the right life if you hang around the wrong people.

So, be careful of those you call friends and ask yourself if they are causing you to draw near to God or taking you away from Him.

Prayer: Lord help me to surround myself with the right people always. Help me to run from those who are not supporting your cause on the earth in Jesus’ name. Amen!
