Every child of God has the ability and the capacity to hear from Him. God speaks to train us how to listen and hear. He gave us ears so that we can hear what His Spirit is saying to the church. So, if you want to live well, you need to sharpen your ability to hear well. Hearing well connotes the ability to understand what is being said.
God is sill speaking today. He is doing that through His Son (Heb 1: 3). Unfortunately, some people have erroneously concluded that God is no longer speaking to His people. This is not what the Scripture teaches. God still speaks! So, it is important for us to learn what He is saying to us now.
You must learn to hear God daily to “receive, please, instruction from His mouth, And lay up His words in your heart” ( Job 22: 22). Because “the Lord gives wisdom and from His mouth comes understanding” (Pro 2: 6). So, if He is no longer speaking, then we don’t need to pay attention to what He is saying at any particular time.
The words that come from God’s mouth impart to us His wisdom. That means if we pay attention to the words from His mouth, we will be wise. But if we refuse His instructions, we will be foolish and act foolishly. As Jesus was finishing His Sermons on the Mount, He said:
“So everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them, will be like a wise man [a far-sighted, practical, and sensible man] who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods and torrents came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock" (Mt 7: 24-25, AMP)
Every time God speaks to us, He is talking sense to us so that we can become sensible in the long run (Pro 19: 20). His words is the foundation for His wisdom. Because He is the only wise God, foolishness cannot come from His mouth. Therefore, we can’t hear God and be foolish at the same time. We can’t hear God’s sense and be senseless at the same time.
"Listen, for I will speak of excellent things, and from the opening of my lips will come right things; for my mouth will speak truth; wickedness is an abomination to my lips. All the words of my mouth are with righteousness; nothing crooked or perverse is in them. They are all plain to him who understands, and right to those who find knowledge" (Pro 8: 6-9).
God is always right. His words are always right (Ps 33: 4). He is always saying the right thing. Not only that, He says the right things at the right time to the right people. So, whatever He says to you in unique to you. You don’t have to compare yourself. You don’t have to be concerned about what He is saying or not saying to others. You don’t have to compete with others. You don’t have to be jealous of others. He deals with you in a way that is unique to you.
Moreover, His word is the truth (Jn 17: 17). His word expresses, conveys, and emphasizes His reality. Truth and wisdom are best of friends. If you see someone who is not walking in truth, they cannot operate in wisdom. Anything you build without wisdom will eventually collapse .
Remember His words will make you wise unto salvation (2Tim 3: 15). We struggle because of our inability to hear what God is saying to us. His word impacts wisdom, and wisdom is profitable to direct or give success (Ecc 10: 10). So, we know that we are on the right path to a successful outcome in life if we hear His voice.
Another reason to hear His word is to prevent us from becoming self-conceited or being wise in our own eyes.
"Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser; Teach a just man, and he will increase in learning" (Pro 9: 9
And as we pay attention to His words, we will become wise His way.
Prayer: Lord, open my ears to hear your word and open my eyes to behold wondrous things out of your law in Jesus’ name. Amen!
