Day 26: What makes a fool a fool

God has a lot to say about wisdom as well as foolishness. At the end of it all, He advised us not to be foolish. Have you ever considered what makes someone a fool? Or what makes them act foolishly? No one is born foolish, but it is possible to die in foolishness.

Just as the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, so also the rejection of God’s person, reign, authority, and sovereignty is the genesis of foolishness. A fool has already concluded in their heart that there is no God (Ps 14: 1; 53: 1). And they will find faulty evidence to support their claims. As perverted as the devil is, he still believes that there is God but has somehow convinced his followers/children that there is no God. Even the devil is making a fool of those who do not believe that there is a God. Likewise, a person who believes there is no God is making a fool of themselves.

So, a person becomes a fool when they deny God’s existence because they have faith in the fact that He does not exist. What a pathetic way to think! They act in a way that excludes God from their thoughts. They deny God. They do not recognize His authority, pay attention to His words, or consider the operations of His hands. They may be educated but educated fools. They may be talented, but talented fools. They may be beautiful but beautiful fools. Even with everything they see around them and the testimonies they have heard, they tend to think that everything is just by chance and it is a fluke. Anyone who does not recognize God as God is a fool. Please don’t be one.

The following are some characteristics of fools:

  1. They despise wisdom: A fool does not see value in wisdom (Pro 1: 7). He does not have any respect for wisdom. He hates being wise with a passion. So, he doesn’t create time to pursue wisdom. Therefore, the person will suffer unnecessarily.
  2. They think they know it all: A fool is wise in his own eyes. He thinks he knows everything.
  3. They reject instruction: A fool does not listen to anyone. They reject counsel, direction, and instruction.
  4. They lack self-control: A fool does not show any restraints. They are slaves to their own appetite and desire. Unfortunately, many people we look up to in our world today are driven by their orgies. They are impulsive and emotionally bankrupt.
  5. They always repeat their errors: Because they reject instructions, they don’t take corrections to heart. They hate anyone who tries to correct them. That is why they repeat their errors over and over again because they don’t learn from their mistakes (Pro 26: 11). They think they know it all and are above mistakes. They have unteachable spirit and attitude. They think they are always right (Pro 12: 15).
  6. They think doing what is wrong is the right thing: A fool mocks at sin (Pro 14: 9). Doing what is wrong is a sport to them. They enjoy it. They take pride in wrongdoing. They take lightly the issue of repentance or feeling sorry for their mistakes.
  7. They will not associate with those who are wise: A fool loves to keep company with those who are like them because they don’t want anyone to challenge them.

Prayer: Lord, help me not to be foolish in Jesus’ name. Amen!
