Scripture: Romans 8:14–16; Galatians 4:6–7
One of the most beautiful things God does when He brings us into His family through Jesus Christ is place the Spirit of His Son in our hearts. Galatians 4: 6 says, “And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.”
“For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.” — Romans 8:15 (KJV). Notice what this means: God does not merely tell you that you belong to Him; He gives you His Spirit, who helps you experience and live out that relationship.
Before understanding the spirit of sonship, you may approach God with fear, wondering whether you have done enough to deserve His attention. You may pray as though you are trying to convince Him to listen, or serve Him as though one mistake could cause Him to withdraw His love. But the Spirit of sonship teaches you to approach God as your Father. You are invited to come to Him with confidence, honesty, and trust. You can bring Him your questions, your weaknesses, your disappointments, and your hopes because you are learning to live in a relationship built on His grace.
Sonship means that fear no longer has to define your relationship with Him. You don’t have to strive to earn a place in His family. The Holy Spirit continually works in your heart, helping you recognize God’s truth, grow in Christlike character, and cry out to your Heavenly Father in dependence and trust.
You are not called to live like an orphan searching for belonging. Through Christ, you are welcomed as God’s child and invited to live in the freedom of sonship.
